The goal of this course is to help non-native Spanish speakers improve their listening comprehension. Lessons focus on the sounds, continuous speech features, rhythm, and intonation of American Spanish. Students learn to produce the characteristics of continuous American speech and to pronounce each sound. Throughout the course, they receive corrective feedback and learn to use the International Phonographic Alphabet (IPA) for the American population. Students improve their intelligibility and reduce their native accent when speaking Spanish by learning, identifying, and practicing the sounds and features of continuous Spanish. This course is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish. Before beginning classes, new students must take a Spanish placement test. This class meets for two hours per week for six semesters. The curriculum is divided into three consecutive courses.
